50 Cent & Pop Smoke: Different Serenades

And funnily enough, just this week, 50 Cent went on a show with Lil Wayne and said some of the most awful things about Black women that I had heard come from a black man's mouth, the same time I heard some of the best come out of Pop Smoke on "Shoot For The Stars Aim For the Moon."

2.10 Mernine Ameris - Hysterical

Ever since the 5th grade, I've wanted to be the Queen herself, Ms. SERENA WILLIAMS!! Yass, I wanted to be the 3rd Williams sister: there'd be Venus and Serena, then who's that bringing up the rear but me, ole' Mercury. But like my Co-star predicted perfectly this morning, my Mercury was a little too "retrograde."

Thank you so much to @uk_101 for the whole experience that was tonight's dance showcase and for spreading the love of hip hop and sharing so much talent tonight! And for letting me do a poem! #ftl2018 and thank you to @breeecardi for recording this for me, she's everything ✨

Watch me perform "for the love of hip hop" at Urbaknowlogy101 Dance Showcase this past semester on campus. I performed "chicken nugget" at Hyperbole 2018 as a featured college poet. That experience gave me insight on the process of founding the first ever permanent traveling slam poetry team for George Mason to compete at CUPSI, prior to the pandemic halting our plans. A group of friends and I regularly frequent neighboring open mics like the ones at Epicure Cafe in order to  experience the slam atmosphere in Fairfax.

'Gift From Virgo' is the debut poetry collection by local spoken word poet, dog lover, and plant mom Mernine Ameris. It explores the intersections of blackness, girlhood, homecoming, homegoing, growing up, becoming and staying rooted. Her work has been published in journals like Volition Magazine, Brain Mill Press, Corridors Magazine, Hysterical Rag, and so much more. This poetry book is a promise to a younger Black Hermione, that she would publish a book one day. She did.

Starting in 2019, The Sunflower Girl Collective began developing their very own podcast on Anchor. The podcast will go in depth of the identity of the women of color artist and what it means to stay authentic in a constantly shifting world. We will highlight the female artistry and genius that too often falls through the cracks. Visit our anchor page to hear some of our poems (in response to Charlottesville) already. In 2020, we began our series, "The Summer of Female Rap", documenting the existence, resistance, and excellence of women and womanists currently in hip hop. Stay tuned for more episodes in August!
